Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
