The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
